Internet and Education with Salman Khan of the Khan Academy
Tune in November 14 at 9am EDT for an exclusive VIP webchat on Internet and Education, featuring Dr. Salman Khan of Khan Academy. It is one of the most popular websites for Internet-based education with more users than MIT’s OpenCourseWare and a fan base that includes Bill Gates. While anyone can watch the event on the CO.NX website, only State Alumni members will be able to ask questions and interact with Dr. Khan by logging on to State Alumni. We invite you to be the first in line by submitting questions in advance!

U.S. Consulate Istanbul Hosts Virtual Election Night Event 
U.S. Consulate Istanbul, in collaboration with the Institute of Creative Minds, is hosting an Election Night program at Istanbul’s historic Haydarpaşa Train Station. Two hundred fifty physical participants at Haydarpaşa will join an unlimited number of online participants, including U.S. program alumni, U.S. citizens, Turkish citizens, Turkish and international media, bloggers, academics, university students and anyone interested in how social media can be used to participate in the political process. Virtual and real audiences will watch the election, communicate live with each other and share their opinions in real time through Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms. Turkish journalists, bloggers and TV stations will report live from the site, which will serve as the main 2012 U.S. Elections Media Hub in Turkey.

Cape Verde alumni kick-off event

Cape Verdean Alumni Launch First Alumni Association
On October 20, 2012 more than 100 Cape Verdean alumni launched the first Cape Verdean Alumni Association in the country. U.S. Ambassador, Adrienne S. O’Neal and Cape Verde Prime Minister, Jose Maria Neves delivered speeches focusing on the themes of Unity and Empowerment. They noted the tremendous talent and skills of the alumni and challenged the new organization to lead the next generation of leaders by promoting and supporting educational and cultural opportunities as well as mutual understanding.

Costa Rica Hosts Intra-Regional Citizen Security Alumni Workshop
From October 2 - 4, 2012, 29 alumni from 12 countries from Central America, the Andean region, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic gathered in Costa Rica for a three-day workshop on Youth Empowerment and Citizen Security. The workshop allowed participants to explore best practices, share successful programs, and discuss their challenges. Department of State representatives from the U.S. Embassy and Washington participated in the workshop and encouraged alumni to think of strategies for intra-regional alumni cooperation to confront issues of violence, drug and human trafficking and school dropout/desertion.


State Alumni Member of the Month, Feruza Masharipova.

Feruza Masharipova, an alumna of the Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA)* and the Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP) from Uzbekistan, is the November State Alumni Member of the Month. This honor recognizes Feruza for sharing her knowledge, skills, and experience from her exchange programs with teachers and students in Uzbekistan.Read more...
