2011 Winning AEIF Project Team Brings Legal Aid to Rural Togo
In May 2012, several Alumni working to implement the 2011 Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund program traveled to this remote village to provide legal counsel and access to justice for those who can rarely afford it. The Women’s Mobile Law Clinic program, as the program is known, allowed NGO workers, journalists, judges, and lawyers to create a legal manual which was used to train village paralegals who then educated their communities about the law and legal processes. This allowed villagers to better prepare cases for judges, whose travel all over Togo was funded through the program, to visit the villages, hear cases, and issue decisions. These services were in high demand, as almost every village saw bigger crowds than anticipated, with many needing to officially register their children- a pre-requisite to receiving government services including access to public schooling. With costs to travel between villages and the cities that host courthouses being prohibitively high, many do not make the trip.
